To minimize the possibility of the belt slipping and to reduce backlash a minimum of 6 contact teeth is recommended.  A smaller drive pulley allows higher torque and resolution.

Incorrect drive ratio can cause havoc:  stalling, overheating, motor failure, incorrect function and subsequent damage.
